Situated on the river Dee, Chester is truly one of the loveliest cities in the UK; it’s a magnet for tourists as there is so much to see. So, explore with us now just a few reasons why the great city of Chester should be on your ‘2021 to do list’!
Dating back to the medieval period, the much studied and admired Chester Rows are Elizabethan, timber frame, continuous covered walkways; at first floor level containing shops, offices, restaurants and cafes. As street architecture goes they are simply unique. The ground floor walkways are often referred to as “crypts” as some of the buildings are below street-level. Chester Rows runs along Chester Cross, Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Upper Bridge Street.
Built in the Victorian era Eastgate Clock is the one of the most unusual and attractive clocks you’ll see in a British city centre. It is believed to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The Chester Roman Amphitheatre is the largest stone-built Roman Amphitheatre in Britain. It was rediscovered only in 1929 during construction work. The ruins are very impressive.
Church of St. John the Baptist is a historic place of worship and is considered to be the city’s oldest church and one of the oldest in the UK dating back to the 7th Century Anglo Saxon period. When you visit remember to look out for the curious coffin in the church’s western tower, set high into one of the Gothic arches. Discovered by gravediggers, the coffin was ordered to be placed high up on the wall, out of reach (but not out of sight!) of curious passers-by. The coffin is odd in that it is carved entirely out of a block of oak. Its date is uncertain; signs in the churchyard claim it to be as old as the 11th century. The vivid inscription bears the words “Dust to Dust”.
Moving onto more 21st Century pursuits, if you’re fond of shopping, then you’ll surely love Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet in Ellesmere Port. This is the largest collection of boutiques under one roof in the UK featuring all your favourite high street labels.
As we end this brief tour it’s also worth mentioning Chester Zoo, the beautiful Cheshire autumn, scenery and summer boat rides on the River Dee; great ways to spend time with your family and friends.
Whether you want to relax, explore history and culture or indulge in some retail therapy, Chester has it all. And, when you decide to visit Chester, who will take care of your accommodation? Just 13 miles East of Shrewsbury and 30 miles North-West of Birmingham (easily accessible via the M54) lies Telford, the largest town in Shropshire. With both the modern conveniences of a new town and the surrounding tranquillity of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it really does offer the best of both worlds!
Telford Shopping Centre and its 175+ stores will cater for everyone’s retail therapy, and the array of restaurants will satisfy any craving too (personally, I can’t resist the temptation of Miller & Carter steakhouse on my visits!). The neighbouring town park and nature reserve was also voted the UK’s best park in 2015 in the first year of the competition run by Fields in Trust. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, you can even join the 600 runners, joggers and walkers every Saturday on the 5k parkrun! If hiking is more your thing, the views from the Wrekin, the best-known hill locally and an iconic landmark, will take your breath away.
Entertainment options include live music, shows and theatre at The Place (worth booking your tickets in advance due to its popularity!) and the range of conferences and forums at Telford International Centre. If you’d prefer a quiet, informal evening, the many local pubs and bars have plenty to offer too! Other local attractions include the Telford Steam Railway open each Sunday, great fun for both children and big kids alike. The Christmas treat of the Polar Express is extra special! For animal lovers there’s both the Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom and the Exotic Zoo (I absolutely adored the Meerkats Experience) in the close vicinity.
Further afield, you simply can’t pass up the opportunity to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge.
